Accessibility

Last updated: May 13, 2026

Our commitment: Spark is built for every learner. If you find a barrier we haven't accounted for, we want to fix it — email access@sparklearners.comand we'll respond within 2 business days.

Standards we follow

Spark targets WCAG 2.1 Level AAcompliance across the parent dashboard, child learning surface, and supporting pages. Compliance is an ongoing effort — we test new features against assistive technology before shipping, and we welcome reports of anywhere we've fallen short.

What works today

  • Keyboard navigation: every interactive element — buttons, links, menus, form fields, the chat input — can be reached and operated with Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, and arrow keys. The Sparky Run game accepts arrow keys, WASD, and Space for jump in addition to taps.
  • Screen readers: all images and icons include alt text or aria-labels. Modals trap focus and restore it on close. Form fields are labeled explicitly.
  • System font size: Spark uses relative units so increasing your browser or OS font size enlarges Spark proportionally — no zoom-and-clip.
  • Color contrast: body text meets WCAG AA contrast ratios. Interactive states (hover, focus, selected) are distinguished by more than color alone.
  • Reduced motion: animations honor prefers-reduced-motion; pulses, slides, and confetti are disabled when the OS requests it.
  • Sound on/off: game sounds default on but can be muted from the header in /play or /progress; the preference persists.

Accommodations we offer on request

For students with specific needs, we can:

  • Extend session length defaults (e.g., for students who need more time per question).
  • Switch the dashboard and learn UI to higher-contrast colors.
  • Provide print-friendly worksheets at larger font sizes.
  • Adjust the AI tutor to speak in shorter, simpler sentences for younger or English-language-learning students.
  • Disable timer pressure and gamification elements for students for whom they cause anxiety.

Email access@sparklearners.comwith the accommodation you need. We don't require documentation — we trust families to know what works for their child.

Known limitations

We're being honest about what isn't there yet:

  • The chat input does not yet support voice dictation natively; the browser's built-in dictation still works.
  • Some games (Tower Builder, Sparky Run) require fast reaction time and may be challenging with certain motor impairments. The library and AI tutor are fully usable without games.
  • Some lesson diagrams are visual; we're progressively adding text descriptions for screen readers.
